Benchmarking
Performance without context is just a number
RMI measures each restaurant against a competitive set of genuinely comparable restaurants, then expresses the result as an index where 100 is the comp-set benchmark.

The index system
Three indices, one scale
Revenue Index, Cover Index and Spend Index each compare a restaurant’s movement with the movement of its competitive set over the same period. Above 100 is outperformance; below 100 is underperformance.
These are financial benchmarking indices rather than scores. RMI does not rank participants against each other or publish league tables.

Revenue movement of +3.8% against comp-set movement of +0.9%.
Cover movement of +1.4% against comp-set movement of −7.0%.
Average spend movement of +2.3% against comp-set movement of +6.6%.
Relative performance
Absolute movement and market movement are different questions
A restaurant reporting +2.8% revenue in a market down 3.1% has gained 5.9 points of relative performance. The same +2.8% in a market up 9% is a loss of ground.

What drove the movement: covers or spend?
RMI separates volume from value so management can see whether revenue performance came from covers, average spend, or both — and how each compares with the market.
Observation: revenue growth is being driven primarily by spend. Cover performance remains ahead of the competitive market despite declining year-on-year.
| Measure | Portfolio | Market | Variance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | +6.4% | +1.8% | +4.6pts |
| Covers | −2.1% | −5.3% | +3.2pts |
| Average Spend | +8.7% | +7.5% | +1.2pts |

Comparability is the product
A benchmark is only useful if the group behind it is genuinely comparable. RMI classifies restaurants across several dimensions and controls eligibility centrally.
- 01
Geography
City, region and urban, suburban or rural trading environment. - 02
Format and service style
Fine dining, premium casual, casual dining, gastropub, café, QSR, bar-led or destination. - 03
Price positioning
Value, mid-market, premium or luxury, supported by average spend bands. - 04
Scale and trading pattern
Seats, opening days and whether lunch, dinner and bar trade are operated.
Operators may nominate competitors for consideration. RMI controls final eligibility so that confidentiality thresholds are always met.
